I’m spending the weekend (in between the visit to Abu Dhabi and MILAM in Tampa, FL) on the British east coast to investigate the destruction the sea has brought to my ancestral summer village. 10 houses have now been raised to the ground in 6 months or so.

Fortunately, our home hasn’t been hit yet, but it seems like it’s just a question of time. Which has made me think about continuity a lot. My great grandparents met in the village. Great-great-great uncles of mine (or something like that) were the doctors in the neighbouring village. To me, it’s aways felt like this place would exist forever. Now I’m beginning to question that.

The work that Lexa posted on our Slack this month made me think of continuity too, albeit for very different reasons. Custom fields, which themselves are only a couple years old, are now continuously represented in the app. Info held in the line item can now be used to filter the parts during run creation, is shown in the run page, in the model library, and all the way to the app the operators use on the shop floor. There’s more detail in this month’s general newsletter, which you should subscribe to.

That’s astonishing on many levels:

• First, I knew nothing about it until it happened

• Second, it takes a LOT of planning and product management to get it right. I’m super impressed with the team

• Third, this was bought about by requests primarily from customers in the binder jetting area. I continue to be astonished by the finesse and detail each branch of the science requires. We’ve been tuning Flows for over 10 years now, and there is still much more to do. It's exciting. It certainly never gets boring.

So, it’s continuity in two respects: We’re continuing to develop the solution, and we’re continue the data throughout the process and the app.

That concept of development in continuity is fresh on my mind in any case. Before Christmas, we had a first at Authentise: A real board meeting, for which I was prepared😂. The core tenet was the expansion of Authentise through growth of spin out’s, preserving the continuity of the core. So we’re growing in more ways than through our tools, but maybe not under our brand and not in terms of core employees at Authentise (which I find hard enough to manage as it is). The feedback was positive though there was a suggestion that we should keep the side-projects to a manageable number again ensuring that we grow but preserve the continuity while doing so. I’ve taken that on board and hopefully I can share more about the 2-3 growth anchors we’re focusing on soon.

There’s so much opportunity though, and so many incredible conversations to be had, so it’s difficult for me to stay focused on just those few. I look forward to having many more conversations in Tampa this week. If you are going to be around, please let me know!
